The Johanniskirchein Plauen is the town's main evangelical church. The consecration certificate of the previous church in 1122 is also the first documented mention of Plauen. The oldest parts of today's church come from a three-aisled basilica that was begun around 1224. The church with two 52 meter high towers was rebuilt as a Gothic hall church after several fires. After another fundamental reconstruction of the church in 1815, the church has almost no original furnishings. During the reconstruction of the church, which was severely damaged in World War II, many previously implemented changes were reversed and the furnishings were supplemented with elements from other churches and the Plauen Vogtland Museum.
